Derry Mathews pulled off a major upset as he ripped the British lightweight title from Anthony Crolla with a sixth round stoppage win at Oldham Sports Centre on Saturday night.

The Liverpudlian floored Crolla in the third round and forced referee John Keane to step and stop it in the sixth when Mathews badly hurt his man with another brutal barrage.

Crolla's crisp jab kept Mathews on the back foot in the opening rounds but Mathews burst to life in a thrilling third as a big uppercut dropped Crolla heavily.
