Chavez Jr stops Lee to retain WBC strap

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr sent a chilling message to his detractors on Saturday night with a seventh round stoppage of top contender Andy Lee at the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.

The victory sets up a mouth-watering tie with WBC diamond champion Sergio Martinez and their respective promoters Bob Arum and Lou DiBella are said to have verbally agreed the fight for autumn.

Champion Chavez Jr clocked in at 159lbs on the button while Irish fighter Lee came in a touch heavier at 159.25lbs. And with both fighters having made weight, problems arose when Lee’s camp asked that the gloves be weighed.

Darren Barker has been forced to pull out of a proposed world title clash with WBO middleweight champion Dmitry Pirog after sustaining an injury in training.

The former unbeaten European champion was set to challenge the Russian in Moscow in May in a title tilt to be announced imminently when he injured his hip in training last Friday.
