Martinez scores late KO win over Barker

Darren Barker demonstrated his pedigree with a brave display on Saturday night against WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez before eventually succumbing to an 11th round knockout.

It all ended in despair for Barker after getting his title bid off to a great start at the Boardwalk Hall, establishing his jab early on and bloodying the champions nose in the fourth round.

WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and challenger Darren Barker both comfortably made weight for their title fight in Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Saturday night.

Both fighters looked to be in tremendous shape with pound-for-pound ranked Martinez tipping the scales at 158lbs, while undefeated European champion Barker came in at 159.5lbs.

Barker: ‘I’ll pull off upset against Martinez’

Middleweight title challenger Darren Barker has backed himself to pull off an upset against WBC champion Sergio Martinez this weekend at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Speaking at the final press conference on Wednesday, Barker told the gathered media that he was ‘extremely confident’ despite going into the fight as the heavy underdog.
