Queensberry Promotions kicks off the domestic boxing calendar on January 13 with a cracking card from York Hall, which sees British cruiserweight champ Leon ‘Solid’ Williams make his first defence against Shane McPhilbin.
Williams revealed he has undergone a tough training camp over the festive period and has made sure that any Christmas turkey has been accompanied by a huge amount of hard graft at the Trad TKO gym in Canning Town.
Nonito Donaire retained the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles, unanimously outpointing Omar Narvaez on Saturday night at the Theater in Madison Square Garden.
Despite scoring 120-108 on all three of the judges’ scorecards, Donaire was unhappy with the fight because of his opponent’s refusal to engage throughout the 12 rounds – a feeling shared by the 4,425 fans in attendance who booed the lack of action.
After a rapturous opening night at the York Hall last month, Francis and George Warren and their Queensberry Promotions imprint return to the venue on Friday night for a British cruiserweight showdown between Rob Norton and Leon Williams, live on BoxNation (Sky Channel 456).
Williams, who steps into the ring still well tuned from his win against Nick Okoth in September, criticised Norton about his lack of ring action since 2010 calling for the champ to stop ‘hoarding’ the title.
