Price vs Sexton at Aintree Racecourse
Promoter Frank Maloney has announced that David Price and Sam Sexton will meet for the vacant British heavyweight title at Liverpool's Aintree Racecourse on Saturday, May 19.
The pair will square off at the Equestrian Centre on the course, and Maloney has earmarked the venue as the Liverpudlian giant’s new home for his next few fights.
The promoter could barely contain his excitement at hosting the first-ever boxing show at the famous racecourse and he told the Liverpool Echo, ‘This is the place that legends are made.
‘I remember coming here with my dad who was a great racing man, I remember the crowd and the atmosphere – and then someone said we could have a boxing show there.
‘I thought ‘bloody hell, you know what? This is the place where Red Rum ran.’ Liverpool has never had a British heavyweight champion, so I thought let’s bring him to the home of sporting legends and let’s win it there!
‘I’d like to make this his home venue for the next three or four fights as we move through the rankings ready for our attack on the world.’
Liverpool fan Price saw his favourite football team end a six-year wait for a trophy by lifting the Carling Cup last week and his target is to end years of hurt for the city's biggest hitters.
‘I’ve known the venue was available for a while, but we needed a fight big enough to warrant it,’ Price told the Echo. ‘I’m potentially the first British heavyweight champion from this city.
‘The champions we’ve had from this city have all been at different weights. It’s a great fighting city and there’s one thing missing. I’ve got the chance now to make history.
‘To do it in Liverpool and such an iconic venue is a dream come true. Obviously the Echo Arena is a fantastic venue, too, but this is a little bit different. It’s got a different air about it and the venue itself is lovely.’
