Drama at Fury vs Rogan weigh-in
Tyson Fury came in at his career lightest yesterday for his Irish heavyweight title fight against Martin Rogan tonight at Odyssey Arena in Belfast but the high drama occurred once the fighters stepped off the scales.
Having promised in the build up that he had shed the weight and was in his best shape Fury clocked in at a career low of 17st 7lbs 12oz (245lbs) while a ripped Rogan came in at 16st 4lbs 4oz (228lbs).
But things got heated when Rogan claimed he was handed a revised fight contract changing the contest from a 10-rounder to a 12-rounder, after which he stormed out of the building claiming he would not fight for the Irish title over 12 rounds.
Rogan later told the gathered media, ‘They’re trying to force me to sign a contract for 12 rounds. The Irish title, as we all know it, and for those who isn’t aware of it, it’s a 10 round fight, it always has been.’
Promoter Mick Hennessy confirmed that the Irish title is fought over 10 rounds but explained that the Boxing Union of Ireland (BUI) had made an exception for Fury vs Rogan because it was a ‘big international fight’.
Both Fury and Rogan have only gone past the 10th round once in their careers however the fight is scheduled to go on for 12 rounds with both fighters in attendance, but whether it will be for the Irish title still remains unclear.
