Golden Boy line up Alvarez vs Ortiz
Alavarez's original opponent was Paul Williams but after Williams was left paralyzed from an unfortunate motorcycle injury, the fight was obviously canceled.
Having moved quickly to install big-hitting James Kirkland as a new opponent for that date, Golden Boy was once again searching for a challenger after the ‘Mandingo Warrior’ pulled out with a hand injury.
Now Golden Boy have turned to fellow Mexican star ‘Vicious’ Victor, who will step up to challenge Alvarez considering he comes through his June 23 appointment with tough up and comer Josesito Lopez.
Making the announcement on Tuesday, Golden Boy boss Richard Schaefer revealed the show would be title ‘Knockout Kings’ and in a side swipe at rival promoters Top Rank and their massive Pacquiao vs Bradley card said, ‘Judges, leave your scorecards at home.’
The show, which lands on Showtime pay-per-view in the US, will feature Jhonny Gonzalez in a WBC featherweight title defence against Daniel Ponce De Leon on the undercard.
And with two more fights to announce, the four-fight TV broadcast is already stacking up to be an all-action thriller with a KO of the Night bonus of $100,000, to be voted by the fans, added to the mix.
‘Our obligation as a promoter is to bring exciting fights to the fight fans. The fans deserve good decisions,’ said Oscar De La Hoya on a media conference call to announce the card.
