Word from Hamburg is that Shannon Briggs was rushed to hospital after his beating at the hands of Vitali Klitschko on Saturday night. The 38-year-old heavyweight contender is said to be in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital Eppendorf, Hamburg, after suffering concussion and fractured cheekbones. As well as undergoing surgery on his face, Briggs will also receive treatment for a pulled tendon and torn muscle in his right arm.
The referee on the night, Ian John-Lewis from Gillingham in Kent, has come under heavy criticism for not stopping the fight and has defended himself by saying, “It was a heavyweight world championship. These are tough guys and as long as a man fights back, you have to give him a chance.”
Did you see the fight? What do you reckon, should the ref have called time on the action before the scheduled 12 rounds were up?
